On Thursday August 23rd, join the Biomedical Zone, as we host an evening of innovation with a special panel event: “Humanizing AI for Healthcare”. Our event will bring together entrepreneurs, clinicians, researchers, and thought leaders to discuss and debate the impact of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
This evening will be filled with industry networking, tech demos from rising startups, and key insights from a panel of leading speakers. The event aims to highlight to attendees the current applications of AI, how healthcare can remain humanized and future opportunities for AI to continue to transform healthcare.
About Our Moderator, Arif Siddiqui
The panel will be moderated by our Entrepreneur in Residence Arif Siddiqui. Arif is a strategic analytics consultant for PwC. In addition to consulting in the healthcare space, Arif also consults in transportation and logistics, public utilities, and the pharma / life sciences sector. Prior to joining PwC, Arif developed and led Trillium Health Partners and the Institute for Better Health in a Big Data and Artificial Intelligence strategy development process which included conducting advanced analytics proof of concepts.

Dr. Teodor Grantcharov, Founder of OR Black Box & Keenan Chair in Surgery, St. Michael’s Hospital
Dr. Teodor Grantcharov is the founder of OR Black Box. Designed after the ‘black box’ used in aircraft investigations his device records surgical procedures to create an electronic record and analyzes surgical decisions and practices. The device aims to transform the safety culture in medicine and introduce modern safety management systems in the high-risk operating room environment. Dr. Grantcharov also holds the Keenan Chair in Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and is the Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Grantcharov has become an internationally recognized leader in innovation and has more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and over 180 invited presentations in Europe, South- and North America. He currently sits on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and on numerous committees with Surgical Professional Societies in North America and Europe.
Dr. Muhammad Mamdani, Founding Director, Li Ka Shing Centre for Healthcare Analytics Research
Dr. Mamdami is currently the founding Director of the Li Ka Shing Centre for Healthcare Analytics Research and Training (LKS-CHART) at St. Michael’s Hospital. He is also a professor at the University of Toronto: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, and the Institute of Health Policy. Additionally Dr. Mamdami is an adjunct Senior Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), a member of the Human Drug Advisory Panel of the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB), and is a co-Principal Investigator of the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network (ODPRN). In 2010, Dr. Mamdani was named among Canada’s Top 40 under 40 and has published approximately 450 research studies in peer-reviewed medical journals, including leading journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, the Journal of the American Medical Association and the British Medical Journal.
Dr. Joshua Liu, CEO, SeamlessMD
Joshua Liu is the Co-founder & CEO of SeamlessMD, a digital health company transforming surgical care. As a physician turned entrepreneur, Joshua leverages his experience in the medical field by being the active Chair of the Canadian Medical Association’s Joule Innovation Council, a Startup Advisor to Northeastern University and mentor for the Canadian Top 20 Under 20 program. During his medical training, he has researched hospital readmissions at UHN’s Centre for Innovation in Complex Care and has also sat on UHN’s physician advisory group. Joshua continues to lead innovation in the healthcare landscape and has received recognition from Forbes 30 Under 30 in Science and Healthcare, Canadian Top 20 Under 20, Next 36 high impact entrepreneur, TD Canada Trust Scholar and the Eric Fonberg MD Award for Health Systems Leadership.
Matt McInnis, Data Scientist, Data & AI at Microsoft Canada
Matt McInnis is currently a Data Scientist, working in the Data & AI Division at Microsoft Canada. Matt has worked with analytics leaders at top Canadian companies to help them drive business value with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science. Matt has previously worked at IBM as a Data Scientist and Open Source Evangelist helping create and lead hands-on data science and machine learning workshops. Matt’s previous experience includes leading private consultation with analytics executives in business, healthcare, startups and government bodies at the provincial and federal level.
Neil Hepburn, Independent Consultant, working with OMERS
Neil Hepburn is a Certified Data Management Professional, Certified Google GCP Data Engineer, and has over 23 years of software, IT, and data management experience. Neil has deep expertise in Agile Analytics having completed over 50 proof-of-concepts over 10 industries. Neil has spoken on the topic of Analytics, Information Management, and AI in numerous public forums in the US and Canada. Most recently Neil has launched a new podcast about the human and technology dynamics surrounding Analytics and Information Management.
