November is Research Month across Unity Health Toronto. This year more than two dozen events will be held virtually through Zoom.
To celebrate the impact that research makes on policy, practice and, most importantly, patients, several activities are taking place throughout the month that staff are invited to attend. These include unique rounds, lectureships, workshops and networking opportunities. See below for a full calendar of events and join us for as many of these as you can or download the calendar here. Check the calendar regularly to see if new events have been added or if dates and times have been altered. To find the Zoom information for an event, please click on the event in the calendar.

Daily oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is up to 99% effective in preventing HIV transmission and has been available since 2012. However, of the 1.2 million Americans who could benefit from PrEP, only 1 in 4 are using it, and there are substantial racial and ethnic inequities in use. Dr. Julia Marcus is Associate Professor of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute. In this presentation, Dr. Marcus will provide an overview of PrEP, characterize structural and provider-level barriers to broad and equitable PrEP implementation, and discuss her research on strategies to improve PrEP access, including the use of electronic health records to support PrEP prescribing in primary care.

A systematic review locates, appraises and synthesizes all available evidence to answer a specific question. It is as much a process as it is an end product. Planning your review before you start will not only speed up the production process; it will improve the quality of your review by assuring that you are attaining the highest level of medical evidence. Planning your Systematic Review will breakdown the planning process into a series of essentials steps.

Title: The Impact of Psychosocial Factors on the Outcome of Surgical Repair for Rotator Cuff Tears – A Prospective Cohort (IMPROVE Study)
Supervisor: Aaron Nauth
Rotator cuff tears are a common cause of pain and reduced function in the shoulder. The impact of psychosocial factors on patients outcomes following rotator cuff repair surgery is unclear. A multi-centre, prospective, cohort study was performed where patients with a full-thickness rotator cuff tear were enrolled prior to rotator cuff repair surgery. Patients completed multiple validated questionnaires to measure psychosocial functioning (symptoms of depression, anxiety, pain catastrophizing, treatment expectations and social support) at the pre-operative visit. Patients were followed for one year after their surgery.

In this Q&A session, they’ll share what they look for in story ideas and pitches, how the pandemic has impacted their work and their observations on the challenges journalists face in this current climate as science is debated (and twisted) on social media and beyond.
