Event Details

Date: December 9, 2014

Time: 1:00-2:00pm

When Dr. Alex Abramovich told administrators at Toronto’s Shelter, Support and Housing Administration (SSHA) that there was work to do to make sure LGBTQ2 youth feel welcome and safe at city homeless shelters, he was asked for more evidence. So Dr. Abramovich undertook a PhD thesis to gather more data, documenting his journey through a website and raising awareness of the issue along the way.

Thesis in hand, Dr. Abramovich returned to City Hall, making deputations to City committees, meeting with City Councilors and staff, participating in partnership tables, speaking to media – doing whatever it took to see his research translated into solutions. The story’s not over, but Toronto is now well on the way to seeing increased training for shelter staff on working with LGBTQ2 youth; revised shelter standards that consider barriers for LGBTQ2 youth; and, the city’s first shelter beds specifically for LGBTQ2 youth.

In this special, KT-focused session, Dr. Alex Abramovich (CAMH) will share his experience of making change at City Hall, one deputation at a time.
