SRSA Board Game Night – Fri, Jan 8th, 2021 at 4PM

Join SRSA for a night of fun games and activities! We will have several prizes to be won throughout the night, so get cozy and come celebrate the holidays with SRSA!

SRSA Movie Night – Fri, December 4th, 2020 at 6PM

Come de-stress with SRSA on Friday, December 4th. We will we watching Arthur Christmas using Teleparty (Google extension) so bring your popcorn and get comfortable! Please be advised that a Netflix account is required to participate in this event.

Research Month Book Club – Fri, November 27th, 2020 at 3 PM

Life Sciences Career Symposium – Coming Soon in July 2021

This is an annual event that showcases keynote speakers and panelists who have unique and interesting careers in the Life Sciences. Last year, we were joined by over 175 students from around the world!

SRSA Science Communication Session – Thurs, Feb 25th at 2-3 PM

Effective science communication has become critical in today’s climate. Join us for our science communication session where Dr. Maria Sundaram will cover the importance of storytelling and empathy in communication, the value of your voice, and simplifying complex topics.

Dr. Sundaram is an infectious disease epidemiologist with 10 years of experience in global and local public health research. Her main research focus is the epidemiology of respiratory diseases, including influenza, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2. Her work at the University of Toronto Dalla Lana School of Public Health investigates the sociological and socio-epidemiological underpinnings of COVID-19 disease, as well as quantifying and contextualizing real-time safety information for COVID-19 vaccines. She currently serves as a weekly COVID-19 expert for the BBC World Service and has additionally provided science communication for news outlets including NBC, CBC, and NPR.

Shut Up and Write! SRSA Thesis Writing Session 2 – Tues, Jan 19th, 2021 at 1-3 PM

Having trouble with finding the time and motivation to write? Join our writing sessions as we come together for a couple of hours of pure productivity! The drop-in sessions will follow the Pomodoro technique where there will be a sequence of short sprints of writing with a few breaks in between. Work on your thesis, your next research paper, or you can even use the time to plan out your next project!

Elevator Pitch Competition & Networking Session – Thurs, November 26th, 2020 at 2 pm 

SRSA and RTC are excited to present the 2020 Elevator Pitch Competition, which will be hosted on November 26th on Zoom from 2-3:30 pm. Networking will take place at 3:30-4:30 pm.

This year’s contestants are fierce and ready to present their 3-minute elevator pitch to you, the audience, and a panel of 5 judges. Audience vote matters! Elevator Pitch Prep Session – November 12th, 2020 at 4 pm 

This seminar is a favourite! Hosted by Dr. Erica Conte (Director of Funding Strategy and Stewardship, Unity Health Toronto) and Ana Gajic (Senior Communications Advisor, SMH), the session will teach you how to concisely present your research to a lay audience. This session is open to everyone but mandatory for competitors in the Elevator Pitch Competition.

Becoming a Better Reviewer – Wed, October 28th, 2020 at 1 pm 

Join RTC and SRSA for a special session hosted by Drs. Kati Szaszi and Janet Parsons on becoming a better reviewer. You will learn how to catch common mistakes and avoid pitfalls in grant and scholarship applications. Please note this session is open to everyone but highly recommended for reviewers of SRSA’s Internal Peer Review Program.

Scholarship Workshop – Thurs, October 15th, 2020 at 2 pm 

Please join us for our workshop on how to successfully apply to scholarships featuring Dr. Eno Hysi!  Throughout his studies, Dr. Hysi has been the recipient of numerous academic awards and scholarships including OGS, NSERC’s Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and most recently, two prestigious fellowships, Banting and KRESCENT.

This panel features current SMH graduate students who will speak about their experiences including PAC meetings, extracurricular engagement and presentations.

Relieve stress with art therapy! Please join us for an Arts & Crafts workshop with Amanda Arcuri, a local artist and an instructor at the Art Gallery of Ontario, to relax and try something new. This workshop will take you through how to use paper to create a decorative garland or wreath. Grab some paper (plain/colourful), scissors, glue/stapler, bring your favourite drink, and take part in an afternoon of cozy and chill art-making. All levels are welcome.

*Bell Let’s Talk Day: Self-Care During COVID-19 – Thurs, Jan 28th, 2021 at 3 PM, followed by games & relaxation at 4 PM

On Bell Let’s Talk day, join us in welcoming the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) who will run a virtual interactive workshop on self-care during COVID-19 for our trainees (limit first 100 people)!

Every SRSA’s mental health-related event you attend from January 28th (Bell Let’s Talk Day) onwards will equal one entry for a raffle at the end of March. Attending both the workshop (3-4PM) and the relaxation session (4-5PM) will grant you two raffle entries!

Letters to Our Frontline Workers – Sun, December 13th, 2020

Since December is the month of giving, let us all take some time to appreciate the efforts of our frontline workers (i.e. healthcare workers and non-clinical staff) at Unity Health Toronto for keeping our hospital running despite the pandemic by writing letters! This event was made possible by a collaboration between the St. Michael’s Hospital Research Student Association (SRSA), the Unity Health Toronto (UHT) Partner Recognition Committee and the UHT Pandemic People Support Team.

Practicing Mindfulness – Wed, October 21st, 2020 at 4 PM

It is normal to feel overwhelmed as a (new) graduate student. This feeling is probably exacerbated with the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing pandemic. This is where taking time out of your tight schedule for self-care is important! Come join us via zoom on October 21st (4-4:30pm) to practice mindfulness. Together, let’s start a 20 day meditation challenge! This session is inspired by Jay Shetty. We will listen to his podcast, guided meditation and end off with a short introspection activity.

Food Drive: COVID-19 Response – Mon, September 14th to October 6th, 2020

We will be holding a drive to collect non-perishable food items for donations to local food banks who work hard to feed everyone in our community!

Winter Drives

We hold yearly drives to collect much needed items in our community. Last year, we held a winter clothing drive for the SMH Rotary Transition Centre and toy drive for the SMH Pediatrics Clinic.

This year, the SMH Pediatric Clinic is accepting gift cards, new books or a small toys in the lobby at 61 Queen St. by December 18th or before if possible.

Fundraising for Visions of Science

Join us for an interactive fundraiser to raise funds for an organization which introduces children from low-income and marginalized communities to STEM.
