Hi everyone! My name is Kevin Won and I have the pleasure of serving as the chair of SRSA this year. We are so excited for the events planned this year for you all and we hope to meet many of you. I am a second year Master’s student in the Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology program, focusing on the mechanism of adverse events associated with an antibody treatment used for immune thrombocytopenia.
My name is Zoya Tawhidi and I will be one of SRSA’s Vice Chairs this year. Last year, I was the Director of Student Life and I am excited to be a part of SRSA again! I am in the second year of my Master’s degree at the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology. My research is focused on understanding the mechanism of autoantibodies in immune thrombocytopenia.
My name is Madison Walker, and I will be one of SRSA’s Vice Chairs this year, previously the Director of Equity. I am currently in the second year of my MSc degree at the Institute of Medical Science, working with Dr. Michael Cusimano in the Injury Prevention Research Office and Department of Neurosurgery. My thesis is focused on the effects of cannabis legalization on hospitalizations for injury and trauma.
My name is Christine I am the senior advisor for SRSA this year! The last two years I was the Vice-chair and previously an Academic director. I am currently a postdoctoral fellow working with Dr. Aaron Nauth conducting clinical research in orthopaedic surgery.
My name is Kayla Schumacker, and this is my first year at SMH and with SRSA. I am a Co-Director of Community Outreach, and we are excited to connect with the St. Mikes and greater Toronto communities. I am a first year PhD student with the Institute of Medical Science and my research is focused on reversing opioid-mediated respiratory depression by targeting brainstem breathing centers.
Hi, my name is Christopher Zhang and I am one of SRSA’s Directors of Community Outreach for this year. I am a new MSc student in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology conducting research that focuses on characterizing novel genetic targets in non-small cell lung cancer. I look forward to meeting all of you and organizing charity and community events throughout the year.
My name is Andreea and I am one of SRSA’s Directors of Communication. I’m a 3rd year PhD student at the Institute of Medical Science, studying the neuronal populations that mediate opioid-induced respiratory depression.
My name is Victoria Ki and I am one of SRSA’s Directors of Communication for this year. I am currently in the second year of my Master’s program in the department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology under Dr. Darren Yuen’s supervision. My research is focused on examining the role of acid ceramidase in the pathogenesis of kidney fibrosis.
My name is Jason and I’m so happy to be returning as your Director of Academics! I’m in the fourth year of my PhD at the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael’s Hospital where I work on examining mechanisms linking stigma and overall health in people living with HIV. I’m very excited to run academic events that will give you a well-rounded graduate education and I look forward to meeting you all at our SRSA events!

I am currently a first-year MSc student in the Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology Department at UofT. I work with Dr. Yeni Yucel and my research focuses on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Hi everyone! My name is Priyal Shah. This year, I am the Director of Student Life and I am very excited to be part of SRSA. I am a second year Master’s student in the Institute of Medical Sciences program. My research is focused on understanding the role of our natural blood group antibodies in inhibiting the entry of coronavirus into cells.
My name is Avinash Mukkala, and I am the Director for Student Life at SRSA. I am currently a fourth-year PhD candidate at the Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto under supervision of Dr. Ori Rotstein in the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science, Unity Health Toronto. My dissertation is focused on modulating mitochondrial quality control to mitigate hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury using in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo translational models of disease.
My name is Omar Kanny and I am the Director of Student Equity for SRSA this year. I’m wrapping up my MSc degree at the department of Institute of Medical Science, under the supervision of Dr. Howard Leong-Poi. My thesis is focused on exploring the angiogenic role of long non-coding RNAs in diabetic settings
My name is Natalka Parzei and I will be the SRSA treasurer for the year. I am in my second year of a Master’s degree through the Institute of Medical Science. My research focuses on the influence of the preBötzinger Complex on respiration.
My name is Robinson, and I will be the Equity Advisor for SRSA this year. Last year, I was a Site Representative for MAP Urban Health Solution Centre. I am eager to continue SRSA’s efforts to improve student equity at St. Michael’s Hospital. I am currently in the final year of my MSc degree at the Institute of Medical Science, working with Dr. Darrell Tan on various projects that address health inequities among sexual and gender minorities in primary care.
Hello everyone! I’m Saisujani Rasiah, a second-year MSc student at the Institute of Medical Science who is training at the Department of Pediatrics at St. Michael’s Hospital. I previously served as the community outreach director for SRSA and will serve as a SRSA site rep this year, in addition to being the research coordinator for the department of Pediatrics. My current study examines the impact of school-based health centres on at-risk children in underserved Toronto neighbourhoods. I hope that my research may help reduce the additional barriers to treatment faced by at-risk school-aged children from under-resourced communities.
Hi everyone, my name is Filip and I am the site representative of Ryerson and LKSKI! I am a first year PhD student in biomedical physics working with Dr. Michael Kolios and Dr. Mark McVey with a focus on novel applications of high frequency photoacoustic imaging. I’ve completed my master’s as an iBEST trainee, where I worked on high frequency photoacoustic imaging and spectral analysis of blood clot formation and breakdown.
